Dickens's magnificent novel of guilt, desire, and redemption
The orphan Pip’s terrifying encounter with an escaped convict on the Kent marshes, and his mysterious summons to the house of Miss Havisham and her cold, beautiful ward Estella, form the prelude to his “great expectations。” How Pip comes into a fortune, what he does with it, and what he discovers through his secret benefactor are the ingredients of his struggle for moral redemption。

Will Dickens ever disappoint? I think not。

I have tried so many times to read Charles Dickens, and only with the help of an audiobook have I managed to finally finish one。 I can understand why his books and writing style are so renowned, but I have to say, it’s just really not for me

I read this in 2019。 Charles Dickens is just not for me。 So boring and bleak。

I remember reading the first part of this in middle school, but definitely didn’t finish it。 I think it is worthy of the praise and high ranking it receives due to the excellent writing, iconic characters, and slowly unveiled backgrounds that are far more tightly woven then you’d suspect。 The way that wealthy people play with poorer people as if they are toys is raw and frustrating, and this is a great tale to show why our entire social stratification needs to come crumbling down。 I but if Dicke I remember reading the first part of this in middle school, but definitely didn’t finish it。 I think it is worthy of the praise and high ranking it receives due to the excellent writing, iconic characters, and slowly unveiled backgrounds that are far more tightly woven then you’d suspect。 The way that wealthy people play with poorer people as if they are toys is raw and frustrating, and this is a great tale to show why our entire social stratification needs to come crumbling down。 I but if Dickens wrote the phrase “Great Expectations” into the book one more time, I would have set it on fire。 。。。more

The writing is still really difficult to consume and audiobook helped a lot。 That’s the main reason for only three stars。 Besides that, the story is pretty incredible if not a bit unbelievable。 I do grow fond of pip through his foibles and growing pains。 He certainly knows how to get himself in a jam and somehow has people everywhere to bail him out 🤔

I absolutely loved this book。 It's the first Charles Dickens book I've ever read (listened to it on audible) and I'm a fan。 It's sad, funny, observant。 Of it's time, obviously, but also with timeless themes and emotion。 The audible version is really good and read so well - I especially liked the voice of Joe。 I absolutely loved this book。 It's the first Charles Dickens book I've ever read (listened to it on audible) and I'm a fan。 It's sad, funny, observant。 Of it's time, obviously, but also with timeless themes and emotion。 The audible version is really good and read so well - I especially liked the voice of Joe。 。。。more

Wow, this was WAAAAAAY longer than necessary。 It could have easily been cut in half。 Then it would have been a much easier read of a great story。 That being said, I have a new all time favorite character now。。。 JOE, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! There is a lot of good stuff in the book。 It has some big surprises that I didn't see coming, and some beautiful writing。 I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to get through。 Oliver Twist was MUCH BETTER。 Wow, this was WAAAAAAY longer than necessary。 It could have easily been cut in half。 Then it would have been a much easier read of a great story。 That being said, I have a new all time favorite character now。。。 JOE, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! un libro che provoca grande tenerezza e che strappa un sacco di sorrisi grazie all'ironia dell'autore。come di consueto ha tanti personaggi。 se si affronta la lettura in compagnia come ho fatto e magari lo si ascolta anche in audiolibro, io si riesce a sostenere la prolissità dickensiana。 :) un libro che provoca grande tenerezza e che strappa un sacco di sorrisi grazie all'ironia dell'autore。come di consueto ha tanti personaggi。 se si affronta la lettura in compagnia come ho fatto e magari lo si ascolta anche in audiolibro, io si riesce a sostenere la prolissità dickensiana。 :) 。。。more

My God。 I finally finished。 Pff。 About half way it finally became a bit exiting, that is why the two stars。 It is difficult to write a good ending, sure, but one should be able to write a good beginning too。

I once again failed to like Dicken’s prose, but I fell in quite a love with his storytelling。 This is, by all means measurable, a very thrilling, beautiful, insightful, challenging, and poignant novel – worthy of being claimed one of the classics’ best。 Both the structure of the novel – three volumes, each ending on the repeating theme of great expectations and its perils – and also the bridging of two distinct storylines into one towards the end of the novel, are both brilliantly done。 Full rev I once again failed to like Dicken’s prose, but I fell in quite a love with his storytelling。 This is, by all means measurable, a very thrilling, beautiful, insightful, challenging, and poignant novel – worthy of being claimed one of the classics’ best。 Both the structure of the novel – three volumes, each ending on the repeating theme of great expectations and its perils – and also the bridging of two distinct storylines into one towards the end of the novel, are both brilliantly done。 Full review:https://hifzehayat。blogspot。com/2022/。。。 。。。more

Great abridged version。 Stays very close to the original word choice, tone, mood, and sensibility simply by taking out excess wordage, which Dickens most likely amped up to add to the word count。 Homeschooled my 15 year old granddaughter with this version when we got so bogged down in the original。

I'm surprised that I actually enjoyed this Dickens novel, and it reminds me a bit of The Scarlet Letter (a book I really enjoyed) in terms structure。 It's a novel where you're a little interested in the beginning and then you get really interested at the end because you forgot how interesting it was at the beginning because you were so BORED in the middle。。。 anyway。。。 Dickens does a great job developing such a complex not of characters who all come out in plain sight in the end。 He's got some gr I'm surprised that I actually enjoyed this Dickens novel, and it reminds me a bit of The Scarlet Letter (a book I really enjoyed) in terms structure。 It's a novel where you're a little interested in the beginning and then you get really interested at the end because you forgot how interesting it was at the beginning because you were so BORED in the middle。。。 anyway。。。 Dickens does a great job developing such a complex not of characters who all come out in plain sight in the end。 He's got some great villains that grow in such a way that you can take their side by the end。 All in all, not that bad of a read for a classic piece of Brit Lit。 。。。more

This was so much fun! In the beginning, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it very much, but it got better and better as the story developed。 Pip's world - and the characters in it - is bizarre and very different from my own。 The window into the culture of the time was part of the charm of this book for me, along with the arc of the story。 The character relationships did seem far-fetched in some instances, but I wonder if people really could have been so closely connected in a world with less p This was so much fun! What a delicate piece!I have a good feeling that Dickens' work will finally be my way into the classics。“Hear me, Pip! I adopted her to be loved。 I bred her and educated her, to be loved。 I developed her into what she is, that she might be loved。 Love her!” She said the word often enough, and there could be no doubt that she meant to say it; but if the often repeated word had been hate instead of love—despair—revenge—dire death—it could not have sounded from her lips more like a curse。Up until n What a delicate piece!I have a good feeling that Dickens' work will finally be my way into the classics。“Hear me, Pip! This would be the second time I have read this book。 I've always considered this book the one that won me over to classics, particularly Victorian era literature。 The story is just as great as I remember it being, and the characters, to describe them the way I see them, are endearing。 Pip, the main character is a character I find myself thinking about on occasion。 The fact that he sticks with me is indicative of just how meticulous and intentional Dickens is when it comes to all of his character This would be the second time I have read this book。 I've always considered this book the one that won me over to classics, particularly Victorian era literature。 The story is just as great as I remember it being, and the characters, to describe them the way I see them, are endearing。 Pip, the main character is a character I find myself thinking about on occasion。 The fact that he sticks with me is indicative of just how meticulous and intentional Dickens is when it comes to all of his characters。 I can also say the same for Miss Havisham, who I consider to be one of the most peculiar fictional characters of all classical litersture。 In my opinion, I would recommend all people who want to try reading classics start with this one。 It's a definite must read for those who enjoy literary fiction and who enjoy provocative story lines! 。。。more

the world of Dickens - always a great read, a coming of age story set in such a different era, and always fascinating to read about the societal challenges they faced back then - alot has changed since, but alot has also stayed much the same。
